John Seale was born in 1942, in Warwick, Queensland, Australia. In 1963 he started working for the TV channel ABC as a production coordinator, while starting from 1965 he became camera assistant in a large number of TV films and series. In 1980 he signed his first independent project, the low-budget Fatty Finn.
In 1985, director Peter Weir invited him to the USA to shoot WITNESS (1985) which marked the start of a successful and prolific international career for the Oscar-winning Seale.
Together with Weir they also shot THE MOSQUITO COAST (1986) and DEAD POETS SOCIETY (1988). He also worked on a series of projects with director Anthony Minghella: THE ENGLISH PATIENT (1995) which earned him the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 1997, followed by THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (1998) and COLD MOUNTAIN (2002). Seale’s creative output contains significant films and collaborations with directors’ names such as: George Miller, for the film LORENZO’S OIL (1991), THE FIRM (1992) by Sidney Pollack, he also signed THE PERFECT STORM (1999) and POSEIDON (2005) by Wolfgang Petersen, and he collaborated with the Hollywood greats from the ranks of John Boorman, BEYOND RANGOON (1994), Rob Reiner continue…
